SBB train control facilities
The train control equipment ZKE of the Swiss Federal Railways SBB serves to maintain and improve safety and availability. In particular, the purpose of the systems is to detect and eliminate potential risks on trains before an event occurs and to maintain track availability through early detection and appropriate intervention measures.
These facilities include RAWLOC systems as so-called wheel load checkpoints RLC.
The wheel load checkpoints are part of the train control equipment used throughout the SBB network and serve to ensure the safety of rail operations. Originally designed as “wheel load scales” (quasi static), it has become apparent over the last few years that the system is capable of much more. It has evolved into an RLC that can also measure the wheel and thus axle loads of fast-moving trains (dynamic).
RLC are primarily of interest for freight trains. Here, most of the causes of the deviations measured by the RLC occur during loading of the cars and train formation. Loading displacements and rolling stock defects can also occur while the train is in motion.
The wheel load checkpoints RLC with RAWLOC are installed at 13 locations in the Swiss rail network.
RAWLOC in Asia
RAWLOC monitors the daily traffic in main lines detecting overloads, unbalanced loads and flat wheels. The systems increase security and availability of the infrastructur.

Railroad Noise Monitoring
In the railroad noise monitoring program of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport, RAWLOC are used together with acoustic measuring devices.
Railroad noise monitoring is used to monitor the development of rolling stock and total noise emissions. The total emissions caused by the rolling stock and track system are recorded.
RAWLOC detects the type of passing wagons (passenger wagons, freight wagons, locomotives) by their axle patterns and wheel loads and links them to the noise measurements.
