WILOC for faster pit stops

2017 marked the start of construction of one of the most modern maintenance facilities for the Swiss Federal Railways. Three inspection tracks for the maintenance of multiple and articulated trainswere built on an area of around 5000 square meters at the Olten facility.

  • Track 1: 189m long measuring track (DIN 27202-10 Cat. C with flatness specification +/-0.5mm) with two integrated dynamic wheel load measurement systems WILOC with sinus run correction¹ for commissioning 150m long trains. The track consists of side and middle pit, left-sided high platform, rail-guided roof platforms on both sides, personal fall protection system, the sidings and an overhead contact line including fencing and safety control system.
  • Track 2: 189m long inspection track with 16-section inground lifting system (300t) and personal fall protection system.
  • Track 3: 189m long inspection track with lifting jack system, personal fall protection system and an enclosed pit in the outside area.
  • All three tracks are spanned by four cranes (2 cranes of 2x16t and 2 cranes of 5t) with a crane hook height of 8.5m.
  • The Olten facility has the capacity to inspect 375 trains per year.

¹The lateral axle displacement is measured and the wheel loads can be compensated

After two years of operation, the measuring track procured as a measuring system with a dynamic wheel load measurement system can be called a success. The measurements can be carried out efficiently and the reports can be generated automatically in a way that cannot be manipulated. It is immediately indicated if the wheel load forces are outside the tolerance. The wheel load measuring system with sinus run correction can be used for further analyses in the future.

ACCURACY ACCORDING TO DIN27201-5 / EN15654-2
Parameters Accuracy
Total load 0.1 % and not less than 100 kg
Bogie and axle load 0.2 % and not less than 50 kg
Wheel load 0.5 % not less than 20 kg

World premiere at Innotrans¹ 2018 in Berlin

The dynamic wheel load measurement system WILOC is optionally equipped with distance sensors, which measure the position of the wheel across the road. The influence of the lateral axle displacement to the wheel loads left and right can be compensated. This produces better results and leads to higher measurement reliability. WILOC determines the wheel loads of multiple and articulated trains also of single wagons and locomotive before they will be put into circulation. In combination with a measuring track, geometric logs, wheel loads, axle loads and vehicle mass can be defined. WILOC is a powerful instrument used by railway car manufacturers and maintenance workshops.

¹InnoTrans is the leading international trade fair for traffic technology, which takes place every two years in Berlin.

WILOC on the Rad Schiene Dresden 2018 und 2020

For the second time WILOC is present on the Rad Schiene Dresden. Dr. Werner Kurfess and Dipl.-Ing. André Aeschbacher from the Swiss Federal Railways are talking about the experience with the system.
